Long Before Jeannette McCarthy Was A Candidate For Mayor, Jeannette
Was Working To Give The Waltham Hospital A Fair Chance To Survive
Long-Term. Why?
 |
Our city needs and deserves
a hospital. |
|
 |
Waltham Hospital was one
of the city's largest employers. |
| |
 |
The hospital's land (19+ acres) was
originally owned by the city and deeded to the hospital
for nominal consideration. The hospital's land and buildings
are assessed for well over 40 million dollars
and were all sold to a private developer for 8.5 million
dollars. |
 |
Rather than follow the plan presented
by the private real estate developer, Jeannette had the vision
to see that rezoning the entire hospital site up front
to allow uses other than hospital uses on the hospital portion
of the land would not provide protection for the hospital
long-term. (Jeannette voted no on the zone changes to all
the hospital's land.) |
| |
 |
Then City Council President Thomas Stanley
was instrumental in pushing the zone changes for
the entire parcel through the City Council. Mayor Gately
also worked hand-in-hand with the private developer
and signed all the hospital zone changes into law in May 2002. |

 |
Researched
the hospital's deeds and plans to determine the city's
rights in the hospital's land.
|
| |
 |
Advocated that the city receive a fair
value for the city-owned heliport land and not just give
it away. |
| |
 |
Advocated that the hospital
building and land upon which the hospital sits be
placed in an independent charitable trust to protect
the hospital long term. |
| |
 |
Advocated that the city take the hospital
building and land upon which the hospital sits by
eminent domain to protect the hospital long-term. |
| |
 |
Advocated against rezoning the land
on which the hospital sits to protect the hospital long-term
and to give the city some negotiation strength in the future
with regard to the hospital.
